Stage One Assessment

Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test™ (FACT™)

The Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test™ (FACT™) is the Stage One written assessment used in entry-level firefighter recruitment to measure aptitude and personal characteristics linked to successful firefighter performance.

Candidates complete the FACT™ in a proctored computer lab environment. Results are issued as pass or fail, with successful certificates uploaded to OFAI within three business days.

The Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test™ (FACT™) is used in entry-level firefighter recruitment and includes subtests designed to measure constructs associated with successful firefighter job performance.

The components of the FACT™ were developed and validated by firefighters and fire captains with direct experience performing the essential functions of the job. Each construct has been linked to a national firefighter job description and identified as a critical skill or ability necessary for performance.

The written assessment consists of two sections: a general aptitude test and a personal characteristics section.
